U.S. Passport Renewal by Mail (DS-82) — checked before you send it

If you already have a U.S. passport, you can often renew it by mail with Form DS-82 — but only if you meet every eligibility condition. Send it in when you don't qualify, and it comes back rejected weeks later. We prepare your DS-82 and have a licensed attorney confirm you're eligible and the form is complete before you mail it.

What an attorney checks on your DS-82

Who this is for

Scope

We prepare and check your DS-82; you sign and mail the final application to the State Department. This is a limited-scope service and does not guarantee a processing time or outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Am I eligible to renew by mail (DS-82)?

Generally you can use DS-82 if your most recent passport is undamaged, was issued in the last 15 years, was issued when you were 16 or older, and is in your current name (or you can document a name change). If any of those isn't true, you likely need DS-11 in person — we'll confirm which applies to you.

How much does it cost?

Our attorney-check service starts at $49. The State Department passport fee is separate and paid to the government.

How long does passport renewal take?

Processing times are set by the State Department and change over time; expedited service is available for an added government fee. We help you choose the right option for your travel dates.
